He’s a warrior – Murray Davidson gets high praise from Saints boss MacLean

Steven MacLean described Murray Davidson as a “warrior” as the veteran midfielder gets set to say his goodbyes to St Johnstone.

Reports claim the 35-year-old, currently injured, has decided to call time on his career at the end of the season.

Davidson, who earned himself a testimonial at the Perth club, was signed in the summer of 2009 from Livingston along with Dave Mackay, and has since become a fan favourite.

Injury deprived him of a Scottish Cup winners’ medal in 2014 but he was part of the St Johnstone team who won the trophy in 2021.

Ahead of the final cinch Premiership game of the season on Sunday, when Livingston visit McDiarmid Park, interim boss MacLean was asked about Davidson’s impact at the club.

He said: “Where do I start? …

Low extends Germany contract to 2022

Joachim Low has agreed a two-year contract extension to take his time in charge of the Germany national team through to 2022.

Low s contract had been set to expire after Euro 2020 but the coach will now be in charge of Die Mannschaft through to the World Cup in 2022, which is being held in Qatar.

The 58-year-old was appointed by the national team in 2006 and led Germany to World Cup glory in Brazil four years ago, a 7-1 demolition of the hosts in the semi-final the highlight.

Germany are among the favourites again in Russia, having triumphed with an experimental young squad at the Confederations Cup last year.

Bayern Munich have announced that Robert Lewandowski has extended his contract until 2021.

The 28-year-old, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2014, has been in talks with the club in recent weeks over the renewal of a deal that was due to expire in 2019.

Bayern president Uli Hoeness stated last week that he was pretty sure that Lewandowski would commit his future to the club, despite speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

And the striker says he is delighted to have brought rumours over his future to an end with a new four-and-a-half-year deal.

I am very pleased that negotiations have led to a positive outcome and that I ve still got a few years ahead at FC Bayern, Lewandowski, who has won back-to-back Bundesliga titles since moving to …

Gundogan´s Barcelona exit not a financial decision, Laporta insists

Barcelona president Joan Laporta insists Ilkay Gundogan s exit was a sporting decision rather than a financial one, despite claims to the contrary from the midfielder.

Gundogan joined Barca as a free agent last year after helping Manchester City win a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble, only to return to the Etihad Stadium last month.

In a farewell post on social media, Gundogan claimed Barca s financial concerns were at least partly responsible for his return to England.

Barca have struggled to meet LaLiga s strict salary cap rules in recent seasons and would reportedly have failed to register new signing Dani Olmo if not for Gundogan s exit.

Laporta, however, has refuted those claims, instead suggesting Olmo s move from RB Leipzig made G…

Euro 2020 final: Carragher says ´outstanding´ Sterling has been player of the tournament

Raheem Sterling should be named player of the tournament if England beat Italy to win Euro 2020, according to Jamie Carragher.

With the 26-year-old having rounded off last season with just one goal from his last 16 appearances for Manchester City, it was suggested that his England starting place might be under threat.

However, he has come alive at the tournament, scoring the Three Lions first three goals (two of which were winners), grabbing an assist, and winning the penalty that booked a place in the final.

And former England international Carragher believes those contributions have marked him out as the star man of Euro 2020.

Nobody has been able to cope with Sterling in this tournament, he told Sky Sports.  If England go on to win he will win play…
